In the studio, I enhance my design skills through hands-on tasks like sewing, pattern drafting, fabric cutting, and chainmail creation. Working with chainmail builds my patience and precision, while transitioning between projects helps me develop efficient, waste-reducing techniques.
I practiced my knowledge of sustainable fashion through natural dye, zero-waste patterning, and reuse. Isaac emphasizes minimizing waste and intentional design, prompting me to assess material usage. I see that sustainability is essential in every creative decision, demonstrating that ethical design can unite innovation and artistry.
Working with Isaac and other interns, I'm learning to manage an independent fashion studio. We focus on our strengths in designated areas for sewing, chainmail, and patterning. I handle complex sewing tasks while observing Isaac's project management. This experience deepens my understanding of organization, leadership, and collaboration.
Internship Reflection
Interning with Isaac Couch has shown me that success in fashion requires creativity, technical skill, adaptability, visual awareness, and strong teamwork. Most importantly, it demands the ability to develop a personalized strategy—using feedback to build your own path forward. Through this experience, I’ve grown more confident designing independently and learned to create with freedom rather than hesitation. While I once saw myself only as an independent designer, I’m now exploring other creative paths, such as teaching fashion design or community organizing, that can support my journey in the industry.
